The team believed that bringing more joy to in-store discovery could make Store Mode irresistible to shoppers—and in turn, boost adoption. As part of a North Star initiative, I collaborated with a small team of designers to reimagine Walmart’s in-store digital experience—transforming the existing Store Mode into a more intuitive, helpful, and delightful companion for millions of customers shopping in physical stores.

Problem

Problem

Problem

Despite the potential of Store Mode to enhance the in-store experience, 90% of Walmart customers don’t use the app while shopping in-store, and 48% of those who do exit Store Mode just to use the search bar. This behavior reveals a deeper issue: Store Mode is often perceived as a backup tool, not a trusted shopping companion.

This idea completely changed how we think about the scanner. I loved how the scanner was repositioned as a doorway, not just a tool.

Joyful deal discovery

When customers enter a Walmart store, they're greeted with personalized deals on frequently purchased items. A joyful swipe interaction—similar to Tinder—makes discovery quick and effortless, helping customers build a habit of checking the app on every visit.

Inspired by what you scan

As customers scan food items, they unlock suggestions for complementary ethnic grocery products and authentic recipes—turning everyday shopping into flavorful new meal ideas.

Social-driven item discovery

An evolution of the “Inspired by What You Scan” concept, this idea brings social content and livestreams into the scanner experience—making high-consideration items more engaging, inspiring, and instantly shoppable.
