Project overview

The team saw an opportunity to boost in-store and e-commerce sales—and improve NPS—by allowing customers to shop across nearby stores within the Walmart app. I was asked to design an end-to-end experience that lets customers switch stores without confusion, while respecting the technical constraints of Store Mode. I collaborated closely with the Fulfillment and Cart teams, and the experience successfully launched in January 2025.

Problem

Problem

Problem

In Store Mode, customers are locked into the physical store they’re currently in. This prevents them from viewing availability at nearby stores—disrupting their ability to plan or pivot their in-store trip.

Key constraints:

Store Mode limitations

Switching stores turns off Store Mode, removing access to in-store pricing. Instead, users see online pricing and general availability.

Business constraints

Walmart avoids showing in-store prices for non-local stores to prevent internal pricing competition across locations.

Solutions

Shop unavailable items at nearby stores

If an item isn't available on the store shelf, customers can order it for pickup at a nearby Walmart on the same day. This allows customers to complete all their shopping in one trip.

Always know which store you’re shopping—from anywhere

We added clear indicators so customers always know which store they’re shopping. Switching stores is easy, and first-time users get light guidance to navigate Store Mode confidently.

Switch stores in any context

Tailored store location entry points at key moments will help customers fulfill their shopping need, no matter their shopping habits.
